Populating a Blog with RSS – It’s easy.

Sometimes I enjoy setting up a blog to act as an aggregator for news or a specific topic.  Sometimes I have an affiliate feed or something that I would like to put up on my blog so I can earn a few extra bucks a week.

What to do?

Well if you already have the RSS feed for the news you can just “import” it into wordpress.  There is functionality for this right inside your ‘admin control panel’.  For those of you who are menu challenged:  yourdomain.com/wp-admin/admin.php?import=rss

You need to have the feed saved on your PC but that’s simple and I hope you already know how to get that there.

Personally I like to juice things up a bit using RSS Rebound.  I spend a few minutes each week “growing” RSS feeds with other peoples content, my content, and adding my advertisements and links to them.  I have about 50 “keywords” that I work with.  Here is what I do:

Pick a keyword that I have sites on.

Pull the RSS feeds from those sites into RSS rebound.

Edit the content of those feeds (since they are from my site it’s fine).

Pull some other sites feeds in (since they aren’t mine I can’t change the links, or content….  you shouldn’t either).

Add some content items that are totally original.

Add some keywords and links (all automatic with rss rebound).

Add some Advertisement Items to the feeds.

Then I take the resulting feed that is generated, and I go submit it to RSS directories, and I ping it to places such as technorati, ping o’matic, etc….

Theoretically I could NEVER do anything other than promote those RSS feeds  (I’ll go into that in a minute) but this is what happens:

1.) The rss directories usually display the content.

2.) Some of the places we ‘ping’ displays the content.

3.) Some of those places are scrapped by other services and they will display the content.

4.) Some of those places are scrapped and displayed by other webmasters (goody free links).

With tools like RSS rebound it’s easy to make your own feeds, add content on a schedule, and in general promote dozens of sites from one interface.  Sure you have to ping manually but there are tools to help you do that easily all over the net.
